Chu Presses for Action on Fuel Bank Proposal



Offers of funding for a proposed multilateral civilian nuclear fuel bank could disappear if the International Atomic Energy Agency does not move quickly to establish the institution, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said yesterday at the IAEA General Conference (see GSN, June 19, 2009).

The proposal would involve spending $150 million to acquire 60-80 tons of low-enriched uranium, enabling the U.N. agency to distribute nuclear fuel at market rates on a permanent basis. The plan is aimed at (…)
