The Chinese government decided Wednesday to temporarily stop authorizing construction plans for nuclear power stations in the wake of radioactive leaks from a Japanese nuclear plant hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami Friday.
The State Council, China’s Cabinet, also ordered relevant departments to conduct emergency safety checks at existing nuclear plants, according to a statement issued after an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.
