Les travailleurs du réacteur n° 2 auraient été renvoyés chez eux. Une commission d’enquête est lancée par la ville de Sosnovy Bor pour déterminer les raisons de cet échappement de vapeur dans le bâtiment de la centrale. Un employé a été hospitalisé.

Selon les écologistes, la vapeur qui s’est échappée serait radioactive puisqu’elle passe directement au contact du "combustible" dans le cœur du réacteur. Selon les services météorologiques de Saint-Pétersbourg, un vent d’Est prévalait dans la ville et la région et d’éventuels largages atmosphériques se feraient vers l’Estonie et la Finlande.
La centrale nucléaire de Leningrad est située dans la ville de Sosnovy Bor, à 80 km à l’ouest de Saint-Pétersbourg, sur le golfe de Finlande. Le centre de production nucléaire exploite 4 réacteurs de type RBMK d’une capacité de 1 000 MW chacune.
Ce centre est un des plus importants producteurs d’électricité du nord-ouest de la Russie.
Dans cette vidéo indépendante, une personne vivant à proximité de Sosnovy Bor aurait mesuré un rayonnement gamma de 4 à 20 fois supérieur à la limite autorisée 45 minutes après l’accident.
En l’absence de mesure officielle, difficile de savoir ce qu’il s’est réellement passé et l’incidence réelle mais cet accident pourrait être classé au niveau 3 sur l’échelle INES.
